Work Trip Report - ODATC - April 21, 2012

Hi All - It did start to rain before making it off the trail so we were a little soggy, otherwise, it was a great day for a work trip. The group was a lucky 13 strong and divided up into fewer crews. Big Tree was successfully removed from the trail near Bear Springs. Ed P. and Richard expertly surveyed the scene and carefully cut away until the switchback was free. Russ, Dave A. and Dave W. also were instrumental in removing debris and rehabbing the trail. Dave W., Dave G and I went on from Bear Springs to Humpback Parking., marking areas for future work trips and doing some rehab along the way. Putting those two together in a rocky area are like two kids an a candy shop. If it hadn't started to rain, we'd still be out there. The final crew, Jim, Bob, Jeff, Ed F., Christina and Dennis, went down to the shelter to take care of a fallen tree and do some rehab work. To our delight, the Park Service had been down there and taken down a couple of dead trees that were standing near the shelter. Thanks Blue Ridge Parkway! That crew spent some time rehabbing on the area north of the shelter and before the cemetery. It's also rumored that they were playing paparazzi with a rattlesnake and got some good photo ops. No autographs though. Thanks so much to everyone who helped out on the trail yesterday!! --- Oh, there are a couple of people who did not make it to the tool shed in time for the group picture attached. I'm wondering if that was on purpose!!  Our next work trip up to the AT is Saturday, May 19. Please let me or Fran know if you will be able to attend. Also, if you're on our section of the AT and see any trees down please forward on that information so we can plan sawyer crews. As of today, there are no trees reported down anywhere on the trail. I will be unable to attend the work trip in May. :-( As as reminder, work trip dates for the remainder of the year are below. Please let me know if you have any questions.
