Humpback Visitor's Center & Picnic Area Update

In a previous post, as the paving project was just beginning, the question was what would be the status of the Visitor's Center parking lot when the club work trip rolled around? We found out yesterday that the VC parking lot is half closed - the upper end is blocked off. Curb stones (huge ones!) are being put in place and it looks like that aspect of the project will be finished soon. It's going to take quite a while to get the entire parking lot back to usable condition ..... but it's going to look really nice!

As for the Humpback Picnic Area, it is totally closed. We had to hike through the picnic area to get back to our cars after working on Sec. 8 ('Wintergreen' section) all day. The loop road that runs around the picnic grounds is being torn up and there are some mountains of old asphalt near the dumpster. Repaving the HB Picnic Area roads is going to be underway for a while from what we observed. There was a note on the VC door that the picnic area is closed and they have some tables set up for folks to use in the meanwhile.

HUMPBACK VISITOR'S CENTER:

'Upper' half of the parking lot - closed. Pallets of stones waiting to be set.

New curb stone in the process of being put in - quite a job - stones are very large (deep).

Curb stone on the tool shed side of the Visitor's Center is completed - looks really nice.

HUMPBACK PICNIC AREA:

When we came off the blue-blaze from the AT & turned right on the loop road to walk out, this is what it looked like.

End of the construction ..... still more road to be torn up.

The car parking area near the first bathroom when you enter the picnic area.

A 'mountain' of torn up asphalt - this is right across from the dumpster at the entrance to the picnic area.
