Our crews got the Rockfish to Reeds section cleared quickly after the derecho ripped through; however, the AT farther south sustained tree damage that was much more severe. Here is a story that appeared in the news about the numbers of trees that were down on the trail near Catawba (RoanokeATC is the maintaining club) and volunteer efforts to clear the trail:
CATAWBA— When they embarked on a 40-day trek on the Appalachian Trail in late June, Hugh Crawford and his 17-year-old son Bennett knew they had some hard days ahead.
They had no idea how hard.
"Days are a lot longer than you expected them to be," the elder Crawford said during a brief stop on the trail just north of Dragons Tooth in Catawba.
Adding to the challenge of mountainous terrain and oppressive heat, the Crawfords have had to deal with hundreds of huge hurdles — trees that fell across the trail during the June 29 windstorm known as a derecho.
