Hi All --
Hmmm, 40% chance of rain. We certainly felt 40%, and then some, with rain, drizzle or fog lasting throughout the day. The soggy weather certainly didn't dampen the efforts of our crews:
- The marathon team, with Jim, Christina and Dennis hiked the longest distance. They covered from Rockfish Gap to the top of the switchbacks above the shelter and back, weeding and trimming along the way. It sounded like this area got the most rain too, so maybe I should have said weeding and swimming along the way.
- The only sawyer crew that went out was Ed, Greg and Jeff, who cleared the trees around the Jack Albright loop and then took the long way back covering the area to the Howardsville. No chainsaw event in the Olympics?
- Bob, Paul and Dorothy sprinted through the Dripping Rock to Cripple creek section of the trail, more weeding and trimming, hopefully, not as much swimming.
- Dave, Kevin, Will, Mark and myself were on the rock crew putting the finishing touches on two of the Konnarock projects. A lot of weightlifting going on there, along with a dirtbag relay.
- Finally, Fran, Carl and Lisa from PA, who joined us at Humpback Visitor Center, (We were a better alternative to hiking in the rain. Go figure.) actually painted blazes during this drizzly day. The trees were actually pretty dry even with the dampness in the air. Neither rain, nor snow, nor dark of night will keep Fran from painting blazes.
So far we've had rain and dark of night, well 6:00 which is getting dark. Snow would be welcome right about now. LOL...Thank you so much to all who endured the work trip on Saturday. The trail is definitely in much better shape after this busy crew was done. Won't the Olympics be boring after all of these amazing events?
I have to apologize, I forgot to mention that this was Will's last work trip. He has been reassigned from Fort Lee to Fort Bragg. Will was one of the section maintainers for the section of trail from Three Ridges Overlook to Cripple Creek. He took to trail maintenance very quickly and has become quite an expert with the rock work. We will miss him at work trips, but, he's not too far away and may come back for encore appearances. Thank you Will for all your hard work, your friendly smile and your tales about Mobile Mardi Gras. Don't be a stranger. Don't I need to get a key back from you? Darn, guess you have to come back now!
Our upcoming events are below. Please let me or Fran know by end of day 7/25 (today) if you'd like to help out with Konnarock this week.
