The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) is our neighbor on the AT near Front Royal. SCBI is a 3, 200 acre facility and as you hike along the fence, you can look in the fields and maybe see some very exotic animals. There used to be a sign on the AT along the fence that said "No Trespassing Violators Will Be Eaten"!
October 6 and 7, the SCBI is having an 'open house'. It is the one time a year when SCBI is open to the public. This open house would make a nice family or group outing. Here is their website link with all of the details including Admission and Parking:

Its mission is sustaining global biodiversity by advancing the theory and practice of conservation biology with transformative, transdisciplinary education.
