What a wonderful day for the August Work Trip, I’m sorry to miss out on such a perfect day. For the third month in a row there were 17 people on the team. That must be our lucky number. They split up into 5 crews covering most of our section of the trail. Here are the accounts I've heard…..
The crew of Dave G, Chris, Richard went down to the shelter to give it some TLC. They brought down more lime and did clean-up of the privy. They also cleaned out the shelter and fire scar. The fire pit near the shelter was very full. They also got rid of some homemade fire scars since we don’t encourage the building of your own. Of course, on the way down they discovered a tree on the trail and with two sawyers and no saw that will have to wait for the next work trip. Thanks for all that you did guys! The crew of Dave W, Mark F, John, Karl and Mark H started on the south end of the trail and gave the section between Reeds Gap and Three Ridges Parking a manicure. That was not enough for this group so they continued on the west side south of Dripping Rock and put in icebergs at sites where people should not be building fires or camping and scoped out projects for future work trips. This also gave section maintainers Mark H and John more time to get input on their section. A thank you to this crew for all the territory covered! Icebergs in August! (Sec 10/12)
Karen, Bob and Dave A were on the back side of the mountain leading up to Humpback Rocks. They picked up the rock bars left behind from the last work trip and completed the remaining water bar, removed a large root from the trail and worked on the sign near Bear Springs. Fran took Theresa along on her blazing activities. They finished up the section near Dripping Rock that was missed because of last month’s storm. Then went from Humpback Rock Picnic area north almost getting to Hole-in-the-Wall. That’s a lot of territory covered. Thanks again for more artwork on the trail!
The crew of Jim S, Christina, Jim D, and Ed Jr spent their time working south of Rockfish Gap. They had a fun day installing new water bars and rehabbing of existing ones. They made use of the locust log that was removed from the trail last month in building new water bars Thanks all for the upkeep completed! The Wonder of Water Bars (Sec 1)
A big welcome to newcomer Bob on his first time out on a maintenance trip. And again, a really huge THANK YOU! to all the crews for their work on making our 19.1 miles the best on the AT. Looking forward to our adventures in September!
