While out and about on Facebook the other day, I came across this video on the James River sturgeon. The sturgeon research has fascinated me ever since one of our work trips to Presquile NWR when we took a boat tour of the new spawning reef on our way back to the mainland. This video is interesting with some great pictures and there is one more "special" feature ...... our friend Cyrus B., who is the Wildlife Refuge Specialist for the Eastern VA Rivers National Wildlife Refuge Complex , makes a couple of appearances!
Generally, we help Cyrus in the spring and we've helped out with special projects at other times during the year. There are several Refuges in the Complex, so we may be working on the James River NWR rather than Presquile, depending on the work that Cyrus has planned; however, going to Presquile is a real treat every time we've been (requires a boat ride). If you'd like to sign up for any 2014 work trips to help Cyrus on the Refuges, keep an eye on the "Work Trip Dates" tab on the blog ..... the trip will be posted there (no dates yet, as of this post) and you can sign up with the trail maintenance supervisor. Please note, there are limits to the volunteers that can attend these trips, depending on the work planned, and they do fill up fast!

Note: It looks like the US Fish & Wildlife Service is changing their web pages around. I ran into some 'redirects' and the page for "Eastern Rivers" goes to the Rappahannock River Valley NWR, but it does have all the refuges listed with links.
