Hi All --
Wow...late night with Trail Maintenance. What a wonderful day to be outside with such a lively and energetic crew. Four teams went out to tackle the trail by day and 10 maintainers went out afterwards to tackle the restaurants by night.
Fran and Dennis were out, of course, blazing. They covered the section south of Dripping Rock. It was perfect weather to be painting blazes and they covered a lot of territory, going just south of Cripple Creek. Dennis, as the crew write in candidate, ok, he told me he was attending the work trip and I forgot to put him on the list, wasn't warned about painting, so, didn't have his paint clothes on. At the end of the day, his clothes came out paintless. Thanks for the amazing blazing.
The only sawyer crew of Chris, Richard and Ed were bopping around the trail to get the three trees reported down. Of course, each tree was on a separate section, so, they started on the one just north of the overlook near the shelter, then went to the tree by Cedar Cliffs and finally the one on the Three Ridges Section south of Cripple Creek. Three trees were not enough for these guys, they also removed two other trees as a bonus. Score! Not bad for having to jump around the trail.
The swinging crew of Karen and Steve took swingblades and trimming tools in hand and tackled the Humpback Picnic to Humpback Rocks section. They covered a long distance clearing the weedier areas. This section is pretty popular, so, weed control is really important. We want to look our best. Karen took some nice pictures...check out the blog! Their descent was done via the Humpback Rocks blue blaze, which meant that they could check out the rock work done by Konnarock. It's holding out great and is such an improvement. Thanks Konnarock! The last crew was the largest, and, they hauled on down to the shelter and covered the area north to Long Rock. On this crew was Jim, Christina, Dave, Mark, Margaret, Beth and myself. First thing to report, no garbage at the shelter so no trash burrito to haul out. A sigh of relief was heard from Mark. This crew split up into two, half working on sidehilling on the switchbacks north of the shelter, while the other half went farther up the trail to focus on water erosion and building earthen waterbars. A lot of wonderful rehab work was done! Welcome to Beth who was out on her first maintenance trip and quickly picked up on sidehilling. (Sec. 3 Crew Pictures)
Almost forgot about the late night comment. We took a nice tour** of restaurants to find one with the shortest line: Devil's Backbone (1 hour 45 minute wait), Wild Wolf (1 hour 30 minutes), Blue Toad (had a children's party going on and a group of 10 was overwhelming); finally Blue Mountain Brewery was able to accommodate us, but, we did make it back to Richmond later than usual. Sorry to anyone who was inconvenienced.
Don't forget, in September we'll try to tear ourselves away from maintenance work early for a picnic at the Humpback Picnic Area. The picnic is for maintainer/volunteer work crews and their families, so come on out and join the fun. Details to follow.... soon...

**Note: The 'tour' just happened to include 3 of the 5 breweries on the "Brew Ridge Trail" .... you may get the maintainers out of the woods, but you can't keep them off the 'trail'!! ~ Merlot
