Hi All –
Saturday was a fabulous day for a work trip with our Fantastic Four crews putting in a tremendous amount of effort after being on the edge of our seats wondering if the trip would even happen because of the government shutdown. There were 15 people who signed up to attend, despite the uncertainty, and our luck paid off with the government going back to work just days before. Whew!
The crew starting out at Rockfish Gap hiked in near the Naughty Girl Creek area (ask Fran how the creek got its name) to work on the final waterbars in that area. This crew of Jim S. Dave G., Christina and Lynne hiked in a long way to dig in the dirt constructing the perfect waterbars. Thanks for all the work to divert water from the trail!
The sawyer crew of Ed Sr., Richard, and Ed Jr. definitely got their workout, hiking from Humpback Parking to Rockfish Gap taking care of downed trees along the way. They had three on the list, but of course, found more along the way. Thanks for keeping the trail clear! October 2013 Work Trip: Sawyer & Shelter Crews
The Dripping Rock crew of Dave W, Dave A, Karen, Phil, John and Bill put their construction skills to work, creating a wonderful spiral staircase which concealed a large slippery rock making the trail a safer place. This was a huge endeavor for one day, but, the crew succeeded wearily leaving the trail. Thank you for creating a safer trail for the hikers. Root 66 Project Crew (Sec 10) ; Evening At Greenstone
The shelter crew was Dennis and me. We followed the sawyer crew down, watching them remove a couple of trees along the way. Dennis and I stopped at the shelter, while the sawyers continued on north. The shelter looked very good. We did some cleaning both of the shelter and privy. Dennis graciously carried some lime so we should be stocked for the winter. On the way back up to Humpback Parking, we occupied our time removing those rogue rocks and roots that always seem to trip you up. Thanks Dennis for helping to clean the shelter area and the trail.
A big welcome to Phil who was on his first maintenance trip! And as always a really huge THANK YOU to all the crews for their hard work to make our 19.1 miles the best on the AT.
