Volunteer Day at Presquile NWR (March 23, 2013)

Hi All -

A summary of our March adventures.  March has been a very busy month.  Starting with the March 2 Work Trip to help the James River Parks which actually was the February 16 work trip that moved to February 23 and finally to March 2.  Thank you to Fran, David, Karen, Jim, Eric, Carolyn, Steve and Charlotte for helping out on that cold blustery day.

On March 9, four of our sawyers attended re-certification class all the way in Natural Bridge.  Congratulations to Jim, Ed, Dave and Chris for completing certification requirements for another 3 years.  WooHoo!

Next, our March 16 Work Trip was cancelled due to weather, however, the parkway opened in time for a small crew to go down to the shelter to assess damage and put a temporary repair to a hole in the shelter floor caused by someone who started a campfire on the porch.  Fortunately, the damage was limited to a 3' section of the floor and Jim, Dave, Rat and Lori (not me) were able to patch the hole and make plans for permanent repairs scheduled for March 30 depending on the weather. A big thanks to the crew that went down to the shelter.

Finally, our Work Trip on March 23 to help Cyrus at the Presquile Island National Wildlife Refuge.  We had a huge crew of 20 who helped with clearing brush, cleaning the shed, painting structures, removing casings from newly planted trees and building bunk beds.   We were fortunate to have wonderful weather that day.  Cyrus provided a fabulous lunch which was topped off by Fran's Pecan Pies.  HmmmHmmm.  Cyrus was very appreciative of all the work done and is looking for a handful of volunteers for his next work trip on April 6.  Please let me know if you're interested.  Thanks to Carolyn, Fran, Richard, Ed, Karen, Steve, Charlotte, Craig, Ann, Jim, David, Greg, Claudia, Mark, Margaret, David, Roger, Jeff and Mark for all the wonderful work done that day.

Thanks so much for all your support,

Lori
