Wow,
what a fantastic day to play in the woods. June did bring us a
wonderful day for a work trip, and, an incredible amount of work was
accomplished. A total of 17 people split into 5 crews were out
covering most of our section of the trail.
Thanks
again to Fran for taking charge in my absence, and to Jim, Dave, Ed
P, and Karen for leading crews. You’re a terrific group
of crew leaders and trail advisers!
The
tool shed got a makeover this month. The crew of Fran, Steve,
John, Chris and Theresa did a fantastic job of taking inventory in
addition to cleaning, organizing, and painting the inside of the
shed. It is now much brighter and easier to see the tools.
I hear there was a trip into Waynesboro to get more paint.
Thanks Steve for coming up with the painting suggestion. Fran
and Theresa did not stop with the makeover. After the inventory
was completed, they went to do weed whacking on their section south
of Rockfish Gap. Thanks for all that you did. Can’t
wait to see the results! What A Difference A Day Makes! (Toolshed Crew)
The
sawyer crew of Ed, Richard and Jim D had a very long day and got the
award for the longest distance traveled of over 8 miles. They
first removed a big tree from the trail that had fallen just north of
Dripping Rock. The next tree reported down was north of the
cemetery so they made the trek in from Humpback parking, taking care
of a few trees along the way, past the shelter, where they restocked
the privy with lime, to finally get to the tree. They had some
difficulties with this tree, but, did not give up, and wearily came
out of the woods at Rockfish Gap around 7:00 p.m. Whew!

The
crew of Dave W, Dave G, Margaret, and Mark walked the trail heading
south of Dripping Rock to Cripple Creek doing an assessment along the
way and getting new section maintainer, Mark, familiar with that
area. They turned around at Cripple Creek and got their upper
body workout by weed whacking out. They also discovered that
people were building fires on Cedar Cliffs and broke up the fire
rings, and, that one of the “No Camping” signs had been removed.
It’s a shame when such a pretty area is abused. Thanks for

Karen
and Dave A took the fire road in to the top of Humpback Rocks and
worked their way down the AT on the back side of the mountain.
They had a very busy day weed whacking, digging out waterbars,
checking on Bear Spring and getting more information for the sawyers
on Big Tree Jr. Dave also performed some trail magic when he
pulled Mountain Dew and cookies out from his pack for a couple of
very appreciative thru-hikers. Thanks for covering these

It
was a digging day for the last crew of Jim S, Christina, and Dennis
who spent their time working south of Rockfish Gap. They
trimmed the long grass in the field just south of the parkway and
installed three new waterbars to deal with erosion issues in that
area due to runoff from the parkway. After completing these new
waterbars, they hiked in and rehabbed 11 others on that section.

Really,
a huge THANK YOU to all the crews for their devotion to the trail
shown by the extreme amount of work accomplished this month to make
our section a better place! Looking forward to our adventures in
July!
